All Major Port - Traffic (2009-10)

  • All Major Port together has handled cargo throughput of 560.97 lakh tonnes in 2009-10, which is 5.74% more than the previous year.

  • KPT has emerged as first Port of the Country with highest cargo throughtput of 795.21 lakh tonnes in 2009-10.

  • VPT has emerged as second Port of the Country with cargo throughput of 655.01 lakh tonnes in 2009-10.

  • JNPT has emerged as premier Port of the Country with highest container throughtput of 530.78 lakh tonnes in 2009-10 , with a record of 40.61 lakh Teus (4.061 MT Teus).

  • The cargo handled at India’s major ports increased by 2.69 % during April, 2010 compared to last year April, 2009.

  • During April, 2010, Cochin Port posted highest growth in traffic of 27.34% followed by Kandla Port (17.71%), Mumbai Port (16.37%), Jawahar Lal Nehru Port (13.67%), Mormugao Port (6.42%), Chennai Port (4.91%) and Tuticorin Port (2.24%) over corresponding month of previous year. Ports which showed contraction (negative growth) in cargo traffic during April, 2010 were New Managalore with highest negative growth of 23.15% followed by Ennore Port (17.96 %), Haldia Dock Complex (15.86%), Paradip Port (7.67%) and Visakhapatnam Port (5.33).

  • Amongst the 12 major ports, Kandla Port handled the maximum cargo traffic of 6.3 million tonnes with a share of 13.6% in the total cargo followed by Mormugao (12.54%), Chennai (10.6%), Vizag (10.3%), %) and Mumbai (10.1 %) during April 2010

  • At a broad commodity level during April 2010, C0ntainer, Iron ore and POL traffic have recorded positive growth of 22.8%, 12.9% and 1.3% respectively. The seaborne cargo traffic of iron ore and container are demand driven while POL traffic is largely imports and driven by the domestic demand supply situation in the economy. Cargo traffic in coal which is largely demand driven has shown decline in April 2010 compared to April 2009. In particular, coal and Fertiliser &FRM cargo recorded sharp decline by 23 % and 10% respectively in April, 2010 compared to April, 2009.

  • Amongst the dry bulk categories coal and fertilizer have posted sharp decline of 23.1% and 10% respectively during the April 2010 compared to 28.4% and 6.8% increase in April 2009 (Table 2)

  • In the liquid bulk category, cargo growth in crude and petroleum was 1.3% during April, 2010 compared to an of 1.2% in the same period of last year.

  • Container traffic (in million tonnes) which reflects trade in manufactures and components recorded steep growth of 22.8% during April 2010 compared to 9.3% decrease during April 2009 (Table:2). Surge in container traffic (million tonnes) reflects recovery in world trade and strong resurgence in domestic demand in April 2010.

  • In terms of composition of cargo traffic handled at major ports in April 2010 the largest commodity group (with share in percent in total cargo) handled were POL (29.4%), iron ore (20.9%), container traffic (20 %) coal (11.9%) and fertilizer (2.2 %).

    IPA is an organisation that was conceived and constituted by the Major Ports of India under the Societies Registration act in 1966 with the prime objective of developing and increasing efficiency and productivity in ports and its working environment. The functioning body of IPA comprises of the Chairman of all Major Ports, which are the local authorities formed by a statute and function under the regulatory control of Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport & Highways, Govt of India. The Chairman of Association is elected in the Annual General Meeting while the Secretariat of IPA is headed by the Managing Director who operates from New Delhi.
